Tetas to build a 46 MW / 92 MWh battery energy storage facility in Alytus District

Tetas, an energy infrastructure development and maintenance company, will carry out construction, grid connection and energisation works for a battery energy storage facility in Alytus District under a contract with the project’s general contractor, MT Group. Located in the village of Strielčiai, the project represents an investment of nearly €25 million and will have a power capacity of 46 MW and an energy storage capacity of 92 MWh. The new battery energy storage system (BESS) will be connected to Litgrid’s 110 kV transmission network, enhancing the flexibility and reliability of Lithuania’s electricity system and enabling more efficient integration of renewable energy.

“As renewable energy generation grows, so does the need for infrastructure that supports the flexibility and reliability of the electricity system. Building and connecting battery energy storage facilities requires expertise and effective collaboration among all project partners. We are pleased to contribute to the project in Alytus District by carrying out the facility’s construction, grid connection and energisation works,” says Ovidijus Martinonis, CEO of Tetas.

Developing renewable energy infrastructure is one of Tetas’ strategic priorities. Through its involvement in energy storage projects, the company helps build the infrastructure needed to integrate growing solar and wind generation capacity.

Alytus BESS will store electricity when generation exceeds demand and supply it to the grid when demand rises. Such systems help balance electricity generation and consumption, respond rapidly to fluctuations in both, and improve the stability of the electricity system.

“The rapid expansion of renewable energy is transforming the entire electricity system, which must become increasingly capable of responding flexibly to fluctuations in generation and consumption. Battery energy storage systems are becoming a key part of this infrastructure. The Alytus BESS is another tangible project through which we are helping to build a modern, more flexible energy infrastructure in Lithuania,” says Mindaugas Zakaras, CEO of MT Group.

The project is being developed by UAB Dzūkas BESSotis, which is owned by UAB Zakaras Holding and UAB BESSotis. Delivery of the main BESS equipment is scheduled for completion by the end of January 2027, with energisation planned for March 2027 and operations expected to begin in the second quarter of 2027.

The project has secured a €20.3 million loan from ILTE and approval for €2.5 million in funding from APVA.
