Energy infrastructure development and maintenance company Tetas, commissioned by the electricity transmission system operator Litgrid, will implement the reconstruction project of the 110 kV switchyard at the Leipalingis transformer substation in the Druskininkai municipality. As part of the project, approximately 10 km of the former 110 kV Leipalingis–Grodno transmission line will also be dismantled, freeing up land currently affected by the line corridor for property owners.
Having won the public procurement tender, Tetas will prepare the detailed design for the substation reconstruction, carry out the full reconstruction of the 110 kV switchyard, and dismantle the remaining section of the Leipalingis–Grodno transmission line in accordance with the contract.
“The modernization of the Leipalingis substation will increase the reliability of electricity transmission in the Druskininkai municipality and reduce operating costs. During the reconstruction, all equipment at the substation—much of which has been in operation for more than 60 years—will be replaced. The project will also involve dismantling the power line that previously connected the Leipalingis substation with Belarus. After Lithuania’s electricity system disconnected from the Russian and Belarusian power grids and successfully synchronized with the Continental European system, these lines were disconnected and partly dismantled. The remaining approximately 10 km section will now be fully dismantled, removing land-use restrictions for property owners,” said Karolis Sabaliauskas, Head of the Strategic Infrastructure Department at Litgrid.
Electricity transmission to consumers will be ensured throughout the reconstruction works, which will be carried out in several stages.
The reconstruction project is scheduled to be completed in 2028. The contract value amounts to EUR 4.2 million excluding VAT.
The Leipalingis substation was commissioned in 1964.
