130 years of Lithuanian energy. To mark the anniversary, the international energy company Ignitis Group, together with the energy transmission and exchange company EPSO-G and other energy professionals, has launched the Energy Smart START information platform, where schoolchildren, teachers, students and higher education representatives will be able to find out about the various initiatives offered by energy companies. And to educate future energy engineers, the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania, Ignitis Group and EPSO-G have decided to allocate funds for scholarships for students.
Lithuanian higher education institutions studying electricity and energy engineering and other fields of study relevant to the energy transformation will be able to apply for scholarships for first and second year students who have chosen to study these fields. “Litgrid, Amber Grid and Tetas, companies of the EPSO-G group, plan to allocate EUR 103.6 thousand to the project. €52 for 52 scholarships for the academic year 2022-2025.
It is estimated that in the next decade, a preliminary estimate is that around 500 jobs could be created in Lithuania for qualified renewable energy professionals. At least 1,600 more jobs will be created as a result of the turnover of older energy workers and the expansion of the sector. The scholarships are planned to be awarded for a period of ten months and will amount to up to €300 per student.
“Tetas’ General Meeting of Shareholders has decided to support higher education institutions training energy professionals in 2022. Support will be provided in accordance with the provisions of the EPSO-G Group’s Support Policy and the company’s procedures for providing support. The deadline for receipt of applications is 18 May 2022.
Criteria for evaluating applications:
- The educational establishment has the status of a college;
- The applicant is engaged in the training of professionals in a vocational bachelor’s degree in electrical power engineering, or equivalent study programme(s), the content of which corresponds to the company’s activities in the field of electrical engineering.
With the declining enrolment in energy studies, the company understands that employers in the energy sector need to contribute to the training of energy professionals. The support for higher education institutions, which includes scholarships for students in energy-related fields of study, will encourage young people to study energy-related degree programmes, thereby increasing the number of energy professionals in the labour market.
The company’s employees also actively cooperate with university lecturers and are directly involved in the study process through lectures, workshops, excursions and other activities.
