The Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid acquired an emergency restoration system for electricity transmission overhead lines. Litgrid” specialists, together with instructors and overhead line construction contractors, including specialists from Tetas, deepened their theoretical knowledge and applied it practically. During the training sessions, foundations were successfully installed, temporary overhead line supports were assembled and erected. The easily transportable modular system allows for faster restoration of damaged lines and ensures electricity transmission.
“The reliability of electricity supply is one of the most important parts of our activities, so we prepare for all possible scenarios and successfully tested the emergency line restoration system. There are cases when high-voltage overhead line supports are damaged due to external mechanical impact or natural disasters, disrupting electricity supply. The equipment required for the restoration of electricity transmission lines and, most importantly, the knowledge of our specialists, will help to restore electricity transmission more quickly in the event of an unexpected incident,” says Rokas Masiulis, CEO of Litgrid.
“The emergency overhead line system acquired by Litgrid is crucial for the safety of the Lithuanian electricity grid. It helps to ensure the stability of the electricity grid, allows for quick reaction and restoration of system operation, thus minimizing the impact of disruptions in the electricity transmission system on consumers. One notable feature of the system is its flexibility – the ability to adjust its capacity, thus adapting to various situations,” shares Paulius Šereika, Senior Engineer of power lines at Tetas, who participated in the training.
According to Valdas Bancevičius, Head of the Infrastructure Maintenance Center at “Litgrid,” if one stationary support is damaged, with the new system, electricity supply on the high-voltage line can be restored within 24-32 hours. In comparison, waiting for the production and delivery of overhead line supports would prolong network restoration works to 32-38 weeks.
During the four-day training sessions in Alytus district, engineers from the Infrastructure Maintenance Center of Litgrid, together with overhead line contractors and instructors from the company DNV Netherlands, successfully trained in installing emergency restoration systems for electricity transmission overhead lines.
During the training, support foundations were installed, supports were assembled, and using a hydraulic system, supports were raised to the required height, and insulators were mounted.
The system consists of modular structures made of galvanized steel, insulators, and cable fastening accessories. All temporary support structures, necessary components, assembly equipment, and tools fit into a standard marine container, facilitating their transportation to the site of the incident.
The acquired emergency restoration system components enable the restoration of 2 kilometers of 330-400 kV and 2 kilometers of 110 kV voltage overhead lines.
The modular emergency overhead line restoration system can also be used to install temporary line sections when performing high-voltage network repair works and ensuring electricity supply to residents and businesses or receiving electricity from a generating source.
The emergency overhead line restoration system and training are provided by the Dutch company DNV Netherlands. The contract is worth 1.16 million euros.
