Tetas Begins Construction and Grid Connection Works for Battery Energy Storage System in Raseiniai

Energy infrastructure development and maintenance company Tetas is beginning work on one of the largest battery energy storage system projects in Lithuania. The 56 MW / 168 MWh BESS park being developed in Raseiniai District will become an important part of the country’s electricity system, helping to strengthen its flexibility and reliability. The battery energy storage system will be connected to the Litgrid network and will contribute to balancing the electricity system, ensuring security of supply and enabling more efficient integration of renewable energy sources.

“Battery energy storage systems are becoming an essential part of modern energy infrastructure. They help ensure the flexibility and reliability of the electricity system and create the conditions for even greater integration of renewable energy. We are pleased to contribute to the implementation of the Raseiniai BESS project by carrying out the construction, grid connection and energisation works. This is an important step in strengthening Lithuania’s energy system and building a more sustainable future for it,” says Ovidijus Martinonis, CEO of Tetas.

The development of renewable energy infrastructure is one of the strategic directions of Tetas’ activities.

“Following the synchronisation of Lithuania’s electricity system with continental Europe, the expansion of energy storage capacity has become one of the key priorities in the energy sector. Projects of this kind strengthen the resilience of the electricity system, increase its flexibility and enable the more efficient integration of growing renewable energy capacities. The more advanced storage solutions we have, the more reliable, competitive and secure Lithuania’s energy system will be — and this will contribute to competitive electricity prices for consumers. By the end of this year alone, the total capacity of connected storage facilities is planned to reach 1.3 GW,” says Minister of Energy Žygimantas Vaičiūnas.

“We are moving from the planning stage to the development of real infrastructure. Financing has been secured, the main technological equipment has been ordered, and the project is being implemented according to the planned schedule. We see energy storage as one of the most important directions in Lithuania’s energy transformation and believe in the long-term value of this investment,” says M. Zakaras.

Under the agreement, Tetas will contribute to the implementation of the battery park’s construction, grid connection and energisation works.

Projects of this kind are becoming increasingly important as the share of solar and wind energy grows. Energy storage systems make it possible to respond more quickly to fluctuations in generation and consumption, help ensure grid stability and increase the resilience of the entire energy system.

The project is being developed by UAB FutureEnergy, which is owned by AB Miesto gijos and UAB Zakaras Holding.
