The Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator, Litgrid, has awarded the design of a new power transmission line in Alytus and Varėna districts to Tetas, a company specializing in energy infrastructure development and maintenance. Additionally, a procurement process has been initiated for the design of the reconstruction project for the Griškonys transformer substation. The new 110 kV Griškonys–Varėna line will strengthen Lithuania’s power transmission network and ensure reliable electricity supply.
“To guarantee the efficient operation of the power system and energy delivery to consumers, we will construct a new 110 kV transmission line connecting the Griškonys and Varėna transformer substations. Preparations for this construction also include the reconstruction of the Griškonys transformer substation. This line will create a 110 kV network ring in the southern region, contributing to the security and reliability of the power transmission network,” says Karolis Sabaliauskas, Head of the Strategic Infrastructure Department at Litgrid.
The contractor Tetas, selected through a public procurement process, will prepare the technical designs for the transmission line construction. The contract is valued at €447,000 excluding VAT. A subsequent procurement will be announced for construction services related to the transmission line.
The reconstruction of the Griškonys transformer substation will enable the integration of the Griškonys–Varėna transmission line, reduce the likelihood of failures, lower operational costs, and increase the number of remotely controlled connections in the power transmission network.
The approximately 50 km-long line will traverse the municipalities of Butrimonys, Punia, Pivašiūnai, and Daugai in Alytus district, as well as the municipalities of Jakėnai, Merkinė, and Varėna in Varėna district. The design work will be carried out in compliance with territorial planning documents approved by the councils of Alytus and Varėna municipalities.
The project’s goal is to construct a 50 km-long Griškonys–Varėna line, ensuring the required voltage levels at ten 110 kV transformer substations, including Seirijai, Leipalingis, Druskininkai, Merkinė, Varėna, Matuizai, Valkininkai, Rūdiškės, Trakai, and Šventininkai.
The new transmission line will minimize the risk of disconnection for the 110 kV sections of these substations, enhance electricity transmission reliability, and bolster energy security as Lithuania’s power system operates synchronously with the Continental European grid.
The construction of the new line and the substation reconstruction are scheduled for completion by mid-2028.
