The electricity transmission system operator Litgrid has signed a design and construction contract with the infrastructure development and maintenance company Tetas for the construction and connection to the transmission network of the Žeimiai traction substation’s 110 kV switchyard. This project will contribute to the implementation of the Vilnius–Klaipėda railway electrification project, which is of national importance.
The 110 / 27.5 kV Žeimiai traction substation and the related power transmission lines will ensure the supply of electricity to electric trains on this railway section. The switchyard is being built at the request of LTG Infra.
“This project contributes to the nationally significant goal of electrifying the main Lithuanian railway artery from Vilnius to Klaipėda. By implementing this and other traction substation and related infrastructure projects, we enable the use of electricity for passenger and freight transport, thus reducing air pollution and negative impacts on climate change. As the development of renewable energy sources rapidly progresses, there will be more and more electricity-based projects in Lithuania,” says Karolis Sabaliauskas, Head of the Strategic Infrastructure Department at Litgrid.
In June, a contract was signed for the design and construction of the Žeimiai Traction Transformer Substation’s 110 kV switchyard and its connection to the transmission network with the most economically advantageous bidder, the energy infrastructure development and maintenance company Tetas. The contractor will have to build a new switchyard and new power transmission lines from the Žeimiai traction substation to the Žeimiai and Kėdainiai transformer substations.
Upon completion, the Žeimiai traction substation, built at the request of LTG Infra, will be connected to the transmission network. This project will contribute to the implementation of the national project “Vilnius–Klaipėda (Draugystės St.) Electrification.”
Once the Vilnius–Klaipėda electrification project is completed, a 368 km long contact network will be installed. In addition to the construction of the contact network, the electrification project includes the construction of six traction substations, their connection to the Litgrid electricity supply networks, and testing, as well as the construction of eight autotransformers ensuring voltage stability in the contact network.
The value of the design and construction contract is EUR 3,732,850.00 including VAT.
he Vilnius–Klaipėda route is the most intensively used railway section in the country, making its electrification important for the entire national infrastructure. Last year, about 40% of rail freight and 16% of passenger traffic were transported on this route.
